FANTASY BASEBALL HISTORY
Evolution:
Looking at the fantasy baseball history, it is found that the early forms of the game were sometimes referred to as “tabletop baseball”. One of the well known games was the start-o-matic, which was published in the year 1963. It contained baseball cards of the major league baseball players and their statistics from the season just ended. The participant players had the option of going back to the previous season of the game. The fantasy base ball games became more realistic with the advent of the table top game known as pursue the pennant, which was debuted in the year 1985.
Development of the Game:
The turning point in the game of fantasy baseball came in the year 1980, with the formation of the rotisserie baseball league. It was invented by the editor and writer of a magazine, Mr. Daniel Okrent. The editor and his friends used to meet at a restaurant by the name La Rotisserie Francaise. This gave the name to the game. The innovation in the game was that, the owners in the league drafted teams from the available list of active players of the major league. They would use the statistics of the current season of the players to compile the score list. The owners had to make predictions about the health, playing time and the performance, that they expected the player to do. The game was even popular in the eighties when the statistics and also, the accurate reporting of the game were difficult to find.
Further Growth:
The coming of the internet age brought a revolution in the game of fantasy baseball. In this scenario, the scoring was allowed to be operated on the computer itself. This allowed the leagues to form their scoring systems themselves. The result of this was that, the game of fantasy baseball became more of a real time experience. |
